What is an Ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound scanning uses sound waves to generate images of the inside of your body, and is what is used during pregnancy scans. It is completely harmless and painless, although some pressure will need to be applied on the scanning probe to acquire good quality images.

We have the most recent ultrasound scanners with the latest technology such as elastography (a special type of scanning only present on some machines and useful in certain situations).

Our Consultant Radiologists can also use the ultrasound machine to guide interventional procedures such as biopsies and drainages, and perform these procedures in a much safer way.

What happens during an Ultrasound scan?

An ultrasound scan is a painless examination. You will be asked to expose the part of your body that we are imaging and some gel will be applied to the skin to aid imaging. The ultrasound probe is then applied to area and the consultant radiologist will perform the examination, save images and issue a report to the referring clinician.
