What is a PET/CT scan?
A PET/CT is a single scan that combines two types of imaging; CT to provide detailed anatomical information and PET to provide functional assessment of internal organs. As a result PET/CT is capable of detecting tumours that are not visible on conventional scans. PET/CT is also used to assess the distribution of tumours to guide treatment and monitor response to therapy. PET/CT has revolutionised the management of many types of cancer.
Who benefits from PET/CT scans?
PET/CT can be of great benefit to people with a very wide range of cancer types, including:
- Lung cancer
- Lymphoma and other haematological cancers
- Oesophageal cancer
- Bowel cancer
- Skin cancer
- Gynaecological cancers
- Breast cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Neuroendocrine tumours
