What is a Gallium PET/CT?
Gallium PET/CT is a highly specialized form of PET/CT. Christie Oncology Imaging is one of the only groups in the UK able to offer advanced PET/CT techniques such as Gallium PET/CT in a private care setting. This highly specialised scan is of great benefit to patients with some rare tumour types such as neuroendocrine tumours and less common types of pancreatic and bone cancers. In people with these cancers the technique is a huge leap forward compared to the types of scan commonly offered elsewhere.
It is a single scan combines two types of imaging; CT to provide detailed anatomical information and PET to provide functional assessment of internal organs. As a result PET/CT is capable of detecting tumours that are not visible on conventional scans. PET/CT is also used to assess the distribution of tumours to guide treatment and monitor response to therapy. PET/CT has revolutionised the management of many types of cancer.
